Writing Mechanics: Quotation Marks and Punctuation

When you are using quotation marks, you have to be careful with the punctuation, using commas before and after the quotation marks when necessary.

The coach told us, "Go out and win big!"
I laughed and asked him, "Where do you think you are going?"
She asked the directors, "How long will this last?"
"You are out of your mind," everyone told her.
"I know the answer," she said softly.
"I know the answer!" the little boy screamed. (no comma required)
"How long will this last?" the doctor asked her. (no comma required)
"Eating and drinking," she said, "are not allowed in the library!"
"Chocolate," he said, "is my favorite ice cream flavor."
