Technology Tips: Save and Share Bookmarks with del.icio.us

Del.icio.us is a way for you to save your bookmarks, and also to share them with others. Here's how the Del.icio.us folks explain what Del.icio.us lets you do:

Del.icio.us and Foxmarks. If you already have done the Foxmarks technology tip for synching your bookmarks with Foxmarks, you might wonder what the difference is between Foxmarks and Del.icio.us. There are two major differences between them:

Examples of tagging. Here's an example of how tagging and sharing works. When you bookmark something with Del.icio.us, you have the opportunity to add tags, which are like keywords. If Del.icio.us recognizes the page you have bookmarked, it will even prompt you with some tags to use. Based on the tags people have used, you can see all the other pages people have tagged in the same way, including the most popular sites. Here is the Del.icio.us tag "knitting," which you can find at this simple address:

http://del.icio.us/tag/knitting

You can browse through the bookmarks here, and you can click on people's usernames to explore the tag libraries of people you see listed here, who share your interest in knitting. That's what makes it a network. Foxmarks is private, but Del.icio.us encourages sharing. You can keep bookmarks private at Del.icio.us, but by default the bookmarks are saved and shared with others. You can also share your Del.icio.us bookmarks through Facebook with the Del.icio-us Facebook application.

This Del.icio.us Technology Tip has several steps:

STEP ONE: Create your account. To create your account, go to the Registration page at del.icio.us. You need to choose a username (this can be a nickname or something you make up just for fun), and you also need to enter your full name and password, along with an email address. A confirmation email will be sent to this email address,a nd you will need to click on the activation link in the email for the registration to be complete.

STEP TWO: Install browser-specific plug-ins. Del.icio.us encourages you to install plug-ins to make it very easy to save webpages to your Del.Icio.us account in your web browser. You will get instructions about this after you register, or you can go to the Del.icio.us Help page to get instructions there (look under the "Bookmarking" section for the different browser plug-ins and bookmarklets).

STEP THREE: Tag at least three webpages. You can use the Getting Started guide to start tagging pages with Del.icio.us. Find three webpages that interest you for whatever reasons, and save them to your Del.icio.us account by "tagging" them. (If you want, you can import your browser bookmarks into your Del.icio.us account, go to the Settings page, and follow the instructions there.)

STEP FOUR: Send me your del.icio.us address. To complete this tip, send me an email that contains your del.icio.us address, which should be something simple like this: http://del.icio.us/username (for example: http://del.icio.us/mythfolklore).

If you are in the Myth-Folklore class, use the Subject Line Myth-Folklore Delicious; if you are in Indian Epics, Indian Epics Delicious; or for World Literature, World Lit Delicious.

Alternately, you can send me a screenshot of your del.icio.us homepage (here are the instructions for taking a screenshot). The screenshot should show something like this. You can see the three pages tagged as part of this del.icio.us account.

After you have sent me the email, you are done with the assignment! When you have sent in the email, you can do the Gradebook Declaration for Extra Credit.
