Technology Tips: More Bloglines Subscriptions

For this assignment, you need to first have done the Subscribe to the OUDaily & Course Announcements with Bloglines Tech Tip assignment. Then, after you have done that assignment you are ready for this one.

This assignment has three parts. First, you will check to make sure that your Blogroll is "public" (this will allow me to see the feeds you have subscribed to without having to send me a screenshot), and then you will add some more feeds to your list until you have at least 10 subscriptions (including the two you already have: the OU Daily and our class announcements). Finally, you need to send me an email to let me know you did this assignment - and don't forget to also do the Declaration to get the extra credit.

PART ONE: Public Blogroll.

To check to make sure your Blogroll is public (so that other Bloglines users, viewing your blog, will see the Blogroll), log on to Bloglines, and then click on Account in the upper right-hand corner of the screen:

Then, click on the Blog Settings options link, and make sure that Show My Blogroll is set to Yes, publish my Blogroll. If you have changed the setting, make sure you click the SAVE CHANGES button at the bottom of the screen.

Now, when other Bloglines users look at your Bloglines blog, they will see your Blogroll. To see my Blogroll, for example, you can look down the left-hand side of the Online Course Lady blog (it's a long list!).

When you subscribe to a blog, you can always mark the subscription "private" and that specific blog subscription will not show up in your Blogroll. If you have subscribed to something and you want to mark it as "private" you can do that at any time. Just click on the Edit option at the top of your Feeds tab.

PART TWO: Add Subscriptions.

For this part of the assignment, you need to subscribe to at least ten feeds (including the two you are already subscribed to). If you have already subscribed to more feeds, that's great - you can skip on down to the final part of the assignment.

There are many ways to subscribe to feeds using Bloglines. I've provided a list here of some items for you to choose from. If you go to Bloglines, they have some Quick Pick Bundles of popular blogs on various topics that you can subscribe to. They also have a list of the most popular feeds.

If you are using Firefox, it's very easy to subscribe. Whenever you are on a blog or other website (such as an online newspaper), that has a feed available, you will see a little feed icon displayed in the address bar of the browser! Just click on that little icon and you will be prompted to subscribe to the feed with Bloglines. Just make sure you remember to click the Subscribe bottom when you are prompted with the Bloglines subscription screen!

Other browsers. Other browsers may or may not prompt you to subscribe in this way. If your browser does not display a handy little icon like this prompting you to subscribe, you can follow these basic instructions for finding the feed address and creating the Bloglines subscription. Some websites also have little buttons on the webpage itself prompting you to subscribe.

Some suggested feeds. Here are some feeds I would suggest for keeping up with events on campus and here in Norman, and also for finding good learning materials online related to this class.

OU and Norman Feeds: As you will notice, there is not a good University of Oklahoma feed for events on campus - go figure! It's a little sad, I think, that you can get the latest professor ratings from ratemyprofessors.com, but the folks who maintain the OU website have still apparently not heard of RSS.

OU and Norman news:

OU Library news:

Faculty blogs:

Books Online Feeds: Here are some feeds for online books and other resources that can be useful for the Myth-Folklore, Indian Epics and World Literature classes:

If you have suggestions for some other feeds to add to these suggested lists, please let me know!

PART THREE: Complete assignment. To complete this assignment, send me an email to let me know you now have 10 Bloglines feeds. Also, if you know of any other OU or Norman feeds, it would be great if you could tell me about that, and I'll add them to the list here.

For the email - If you are in the Myth-Folklore class, use the Subject Line Myth-Folklore Bloglines MORE Feeds; if you are in Indian Epics, Indian Epics Bloglines MORE Feeds; or for World Literature, World Lit Bloglines MORE Feeds.

When you have sent in the email, don't foget to do the Gradebook Declaration for Extra Credit!
