Preliminary Actions: Before you start creating and publishing webpages, you should create a NEW FOLDER on your computer for webpages on your hard drive. You will save all your webpages AND all the images for your webpages in this folder.
STEP ONE: Create home.html
Your first task is to create an OU Homepage, which will be named home.html.
1. Start the Composer program. If you do not see a blank page, click on the New icon to start on a new page.
2. Enter a title for the current page. It's a good idea to save the file with a valid filename before you start typing the content. Click the Save icon, and you will be prompted to give your page a page title.

The page title can be anything you want, with lower- and upper-case letters, spaces, punctuation, etc. For example, I could give my OU Homepage the title OU Homepage for Laura Gibbs. When you are done entering the title, click OK.
3. Enter a filename for the current page. Now you will be prompted to give the file a filename. Make sure you save the file in the webpage folder you have created! You want to end up with a file name home.html - but Composer is going to add the .html part for you, so all you need to type is home
![]()
It is essential that you name your file home.html so that it will replace the default OU Homepage that was created when you activated your OU web account. You also must save this file in the webpage folder you have created! Click Save to save the home.html file in your webpage folder.
4. Required: Your name, and a favorite quote. Now that you have saved the file with a title and filename, you can edit the contents of the film. Please add your name to the page, plus a favorite quote. It can be something inspiration, or something silly - it's totally up to you. If you want to use different fonts, please read these notes about Composer Fonts.
You can add other text information to the webpage if you want - but please do not add an image at this time unless you already have some expertise with webpages. You will learn how to work with images in your next assignment.
5. Save the finished page. Click the Save icon to save your work when you are done. Now you are ready to create your next webpage.
STEP TWO: Create aboutme.html
Now you will create another page, an "About Me" page, which will have the filename aboutme.html.
1. Create new file. Click on the New icon to start on a new page.
2. Save the file in your webpage folder. It's a good idea to save the file with a valid filename before you start typing the content. Follow the instructions about for giving the file a title ("About Me") and making sure the page name is aboutme.html (you type about, and Composer adds the .html at the end). Make sure you save the page in your webpage folder!
3. Something about you. Please include a paragraph that gives your name and some basic information about yourself. You can include whatever content you want here - a little, or a lot - it's up to you.
4. Create a link to a favorite webpage. Choose one of your favorite webpages and follow these instructions for linking to a page on the Internet. Make sure you choose a good link text that will let people know the name of the website you are linking to. Please do NOT show the http:// web address when you create the link.
Good link: University of Oklahoma website
NOT good link: http://www.ou.edu/
If you have a blog or some other personal website you want to link to, that's great!
5. Save the finished page. Click the Save icon to save your work when you are done.
STEP THREE: Link The Pages
Now you will create links between home.html and aboutme.html. To do this, you should have the current versions of the files both open in Composer so that you can edit them both.
Link from Homepage to About Me
1. Create a link from home.html to aboutme.html. Have your OU Homepage open on the screen (home.html). This is the page that has your favorite quote on it. Now, type some link text on the page, something like:
More about me...
You can say whatever you want here - just make sure you have some text that will be the link. Then follow these instructions for linking to a page in your website. Click the Save icon when you are finished editing the page.
Link from About Me to Homepage
2. Create a link from aboutme.html to home.html. Now switch to your About Me page (this is the page where you included a link to a favorite website). Type some link text on this page to take readers back to your Homepage:
Go back to my OU Homepage ...
You can say whatever you want here - just make sure you have some text that will be the link. Then follow these instructions for linking to a page in your website. Click the Save icon when you are finished editing the page.
STEP FOUR: Publish your pages
Now you are ready to publish your OU Homepage and your About Me page on the Internet. The first time that you publish a page you will have to adjust your Publish Settings, but after you publish successfully for the first time, you will not have to adjust the settings again.
1. Publish OU Homepage. You should have the Homepage (home.html) open in Composer. Click on the Publish icon or choose File-Publish. This will give you access to your Publish Settings (you can also access your Publish Settings from the Edit menu, and then choose Publishing Site Settings).
Give your site a name, such as "Storybook Site" (if you are sharing a computer with someone, you will each create a separate site for your projects). Then, enter your FTP address. If you are an OU student that is ftp://students.ou.edu and if you are a staff member, that is ftp://faculty-staff.ou.edu. Then enter your 4x4 and password:
Make sure you leave the HTTP address box empty!
Click Publish to publish your page. You will know that you published successfully when you see the green checkmark.
2. CLOSE HOMEPAGE. After you have successfully published, Composer has an open "connection" to your webspace. You need to close this connection!!! Just close the file. You can then open the file again if you want to do more editing. If you edit the file with the connection open, you will not have a copy of your changes. So, take my advice: CLOSE A FILE AFTER YOU PUBLISH IT. You will be run into major problems if you try to do otherwise!!!
3. Publish About Me page. Now open the About me page in Composer (if it is not open already). Since your Publishing Settings are correct, all you have to do is click on the Publish icon or choose File-Publish and click OK. You will know that you published successfully when you see the green checkmark. And then make sure you CLOSE THE FILE when you are done!!! If you want to edit the file, close it, and then open it again - don't keep editing the file while the publishing connection is still open.
STEP FIVE: View your webpages online.
The easiest way to view your webpages online is to look yourself up at search.ou.edu, and click on the link it gives to your website. Your new OU Homepage should be the page that you see by default when you click on the link to your webspace. If you have a directory hold, contact me for help in viewing the webpages you have published.
Finally, check to make sure the links between your pages are working correctly! If something is wrong, contact me, and I will try to help you solve the problem.
If your pages both look good and the links are working, you are ready to do the Gradebook Declaration for this assignment.
CONGRATULATIONS: you are now a webmaster!
